GETTING TO MUSTIQUE
The island of Mustique (MQS) is easily reached from North America and Europe via Barbados, St. Vincent, Grenada, Martinique, St. Lucia, Puerto Rico or Trinidad. Perhaps the easiest route from Europe is via London with direct (daily flights) into Barbados (BGI) on British Airways or Virgin Atlantic.
The international flights tend to arrive in Barbados during mid-afternoon. It is important to check times to allow sufficient time for the connection. There are no lights on the runway on Mustique and flights have to leave Barbados latest 16h30 in order to arrive on the island prior to sunset, after which time the airport closes.
TIME ZONE
Mustique is on Atlantic Standard Time (AST) and Daylight Saving Time is not observed.
LANGUAGE ON MUSTIQUE
The official language of The Bahamas is English, more British than American, and generally intertwined with a special Bahamian dialect.
CURRENCY
The Eastern Caribbean dollar (EC$) is the official currency of Mustique (and the rest of the St Vincent & Grenadine islands), however most places accept US dollars. Travellers checks can be exchanged and some foreign currencies (mainly British Sterling, US Dollars and the Euro)
MONEY MATTERS
Amex, Mastercard and Visa are accepted. Please note personal cheques are not accepted and there are no ATM machines or banks on the island.
TIPPING
Tipping in restaurants is common, with a recommended 15% according to service. Check that a service charge has not been added to your bill before deciding whether to tip.
DRIVING IN MUSTIQUE
All guests who intend to drive on the island must provide on arrival a valid drivers license in order to purchase a valid Vincentian drivers license ($25 as at 9th March 2011). A Vincentian drivers license is required to drive on Mustique island.
WEATHER IN MUSTIQUE
The average annual ground temperature is high - in the summer visitors can expect mid-eighties to low nineties, yet in the winter months temperatures rarely go below 75 degrees. The main peak season is between December and April. Hurricane season runs from mid September to mid November. Any rain tends to be short-lived and mostly occurs from May to October.
CLOTHING
Style is fairly casual throughout Mustique, yet if dining out in the evening smart dress is normal (no jackets or ties however). Cotton and other light fabrics are comfortable choices year round. You are advised to take lightweight light coloured items, including a sun hat to protect your skin from the affects of sun damage.
