Florence Bargello & Santa Croce Tour with A&K Villas

Half Day Florence – Bargello & Santa Croce

Enjoy a half-day tour (up to 3 hours) with your English-speaking guide. Begin your exploration into Florence's rich cultural heritage with a visit to the fortress Bargello where a remarkable collection of Renaissance sculptures and minor arts are held, including Michelangelo's Bacchus (1497) and Donatello's bronze David (cast during the 1430s). For Renaissance art lovers, the Bargello is to sculpture what the Uffizi is to painting.

Continue to the impressive Church of Santa Croce (Holy Cross), which contains the tombs of many famous Florentines such as Michelangelo, Machiavelli and Galileo. Inside you can admire frescoes by Giotto and one of his pupils, Taddeo Gaddi. The area around Santa Croce is buzzing with local life, including many leather boutiques. You will have the opportunity to visit the famous Leather School for a guided technical visit (approximate duration: 1 hour) that includes a demonstration of the gilding of the leather with 22 kt gold and an outlook on the historical and cultural background of the leather craftsmanship in Florence, as well as an explanation on the various techniques and materials used in the production.

San Gimignano and Volterra Tour with A&K Villas

San Gimignano & Volterra

Venture to the picturesque medieval town of San Gimignano, the epitome of Tuscan hill-top town. Its tall walls and narrow streets are typical, but it's the medieval towers that set the town apart from its neighbors. Today 14 remain, but there once were more than 70! The Romanesque Collegiata hides a treasure trove of fine frescoes, covering nearly every part of the interior.

Stroll through the town’s streets, stopping at the many shops, taste some Vernaccia wine in one of the wineries and make sure to stop at the ice-cream parlour Dondoli for some of the world’s best ice-cream. Continue on to the pretty town of Volterra whose roots are embedded in three thousand years of history and bear testimony to the Etruscan and Roman period. Don’t miss the ruins of the 1st-century BC Roman theater, one of the best-preserved in Italy, with adjacent remains of the Roman baths.

Visit the 13th century Duomo that also contains some remarkale Renaissance art and Palazzo dei Priori, Tuscany’s first town hall that inspired also Florence Palazzo Vecchio. Volterra is famous for its alabaster creations. In Piazza dei Priori you can visit two huge showrooms housed in medieval buildings and contain a large number of alabaster objects for sale, including bookends, ashtrays, and boxes.

Vasari Corridor Tour with A&K Villas

Insider Access: Vasari Corridor

In this tour, you will have the opportunity to visit one of Florence’s most sought after sights: the Vasari Corridor.

The corridor, also known as the Princes’ Passage, connects the Uffizi – once the office of the Medicis - with the Palazzo Pitti on the other side of the river – their residence. The raised passageway was built in 1565 by the Medici’s court architect Giorgio Vasari.

Raised up by huge arches, the corridor follows the river as far as the Ponte Vecchio, which it crosses by passing on top of the shops. The meat market on the bridge was at this time trasferred elsewhere, so as not to offend the Grand Duke's sensitive nose with unpleasant smells on his walk, and replaced (from 1593) with the goldsmiths who continue to work there today. On the other side of the Arno, the corridor passes through the interior of the church of Santa Felicita, through the gardens of the Guicciardini family until it finally reaches the Boboli gardens. Vasari thus created a monumental urban "footpath" that took the absolute power of the ruler right into the historic heart of the city. In fact, a second corridor above Via della Ninna links the other side of the palace of the Uffizi with Palazzo Vecchio, the seat of Florentine government since the 13th century. The visit and walk are extraordinary not only because of the magnificent and little-known views over the city from its round windows, but also because it contains an important collection of Self-portraits by some of the most famous masters of painting from the 16th to the 21st century.
