Spring Walking in Spain

Spring is the perfect time to enjoy a Spanish walking holiday with plants springing into life and the sun beaming at a more manageable walking temperature. Banish any thoughts about a Spanish walking holiday being too healthy however. After a hard day exploring, retreat to your villa and let a private chef whip up a feast whilst you sit back and enjoy that glass of Rioja. Sound like heaven? Here’s our top tips for where to walk, where to stay and what to do in between...

walking in Spain

Andalucia
There are literally hundreds of walks in the Andalucia region and with such a culturally rich and diverse heritage, there’s also a lot of history to take in on your travels. Hire a car and start your walk from one of the many towns (Nerja, Cordoba and Ronda are just a few to mention), alternatively take to the hills for some serious hiking or enjoy a gentle stroll at the La Hoz waterfall. Essentially whatever you want from walking you can find it in this region of Spain. Walks vary in distance so some will take a couple of hours; others will take a full day (including a lunch stop as well – of course!) to complete.

Malaga
Malaga offers eclectic walking on a range of terrains from rocks to sand and even through water, think mountains, beaches and caves (yes very varied) and you’re almost there. For an easy stroll take a trip to the Presa e Guadalhorce dam, a walk around a reservoir which handily starts at a car park. Head through a tunnel, which takes walkers under the hill of the Mirador, and follow the path around. Despite a couple of narrow paths the walk is tame and only around 2.5 miles in length. For those who prefer hiking and trekking to walking then the Sierra Tejeda Mountains are the ideal place to head. Situated in the western part of Malaga province, this is hiking territory at its finest. The highest peak is La Maroma which, at 2,080m, is a climb best enjoyed on a slightly cooler day! Whilst it’s a tough climb, hikers are rewarded with stunning, unrivalled views.

Spring is also the perfect time to visit Spain to see it in bloom. There’s a wide selection of botanical and palace gardens which are alive with colour until early summer. The festival of patios in Cordoba, which takes place in May, has recently been awarded UNESCO status for cultural significance. Private residences and other institutions also open up their beautifully flowering courtyards to the public for a rare glimpse, more information about the tours can be found here Gardens & Gastronomy of Andalucia.

Where to stay
La Maroma is the perfect villa to retreat to after a long day walking. On a private hilltop with its own vineyard and private pool, guests also have the option to hire a chef or even take advantage of the Gardens & Gastronomy package. Opt for a spa package to complete the experience and ease tired legs or just simply enjoy the awe-inspiring views from the pool.

Villa Sancha in Ronda enjoys views of the Grazalema National Park and is an ideal family retreat. Relax in Brazilian hammocks or cool off in the pool whilst the chef in the group gets to work on the barbecue. There are also horses in the neighbouring paddock which add to the ranch like feel of this Spanish villa.
