|ISLA SIMCA, PANAMA - THE ARTISTRY OF ECO-LUXURY
On a 278-acre private island off Panama’s western coast lies a jungle hideaway where nature, art, and architecture fuse into a one-of-a-kind retreat. Over the past 10 years, visionary art collector, investor, and philanthropist Jean Pigozzi has transformed his beloved Isla Simca into a refuge from the world’s prying eyes. Maps call it Isla Canales de Tierra, but Pigozzi renamed it Simca, after his father’s car company, taking it further off the grid.
To find yourself here is to experience eco-luxury at its finest. Isla Simca’s vast size gives rise to a number of different natural habitats, from thickets to deciduous forests. Bird of paradise sprinkle the isle with blazing orange blooms, attracting resident hummingbirds. The quartet of residences sits 980 feet above sea level and the island’s four major beaches, guaranteeing bird’s eye views of the jungle and azure bay of Chiriquí.
The luxurious accommodations, with their whimsical exterior splashes of color and rooftop gardens, seamlessly complement the forest greenery of their hilltop perch like larger versions of the island’s vibrant birds. Interiors are equally bright and funky, incorporating expanses of jewel-like Perspex into the modern design. Up to 30 guests can comfortably spread out among the treetop homes, with 60 staff on site to cater to their every need.
From atop the main pavilion, a glass observatory overlooks the entire bay, Coiba Island National Park, and its surrounding islands. Below this is the main lounge, dining room, a high-tech gym, a saltwater and a freshwater pool, and Jacuzzi. The on-site cinema boasts a nearly 3,000-title movie collection. Pigozzi’s world-renowned collection of African contemporary art covers every wall and open space throughout the property, giving the island hideaway couture flair within the unspoiled wilderness.

|A thin stretch of water separates Isla Simca from the mainland, where another 18 miles of coastline and nearly 15,000 acres of rainforest are part of this amazing compound. Guests can hike past waterfalls to beautiful mountainscapes, try their hand at horse riding with the local gauchos, or go quad biking along the 40 miles of mountain tracks. The mainland can be reached by sea kayak to explore beautiful mangroves teeming with birdlife – or for the less energetic, by Jet Ski or speed boat. This gives you access to 17 private beaches each with their own bathroom and freshwater shower.
Everything from hiking to scuba diving and snorkeling is available in the company of world-class guides. Ocean excursions allow visitors to watch schools of whale sharks and pods of dolphins, orcas, and humpbacks as they migrate south. Pigozzi even built a state-of-the-art marine lab on the island, which supports research for Coiba Island National Park and visiting scientists from further afield.
Options for reaching Isla Simca match the dramatic locale: helicopter into the three-pad heliport; take a Cessna Caravan or Kodiak charter into the island’s private, grass-covered airport; or arrive via luxury yacht, incorporating a trip through the manmade spectacle of the Panama Canal.
Previously, a visit to Isla Simca required an invite from Pigozzi himself, but now, this artful, nature-driven escape is available for bookings through The Geoffrey Kent Private Collection, managed exclusively by Abercrombie & Kent Villas.
