La Maison de Domme
Rated "one of the most beautiful villages of France" for its flower-laced medieval golden stone houses and historic sites, Domme is a world-famous jewel. Founded as a "royal bastide" - a fortress village - by Philippe III in 1281 as France and England entered the Hundred Years War, Domme offers commanding views of the Dordogne River valley and surrounding castles and villages. Along its parapets you can now sip the fine wines of Bordeaux and the region and imagine where French and English armies once gazed and battled.

The Maison Domme, also known as L'Espingole, is one of the finest examples of Perigord architecture. With its origins in the 13th century the Maison has been painstakingly updated to preserve its historic stone walls, arches, wooden doors and beams while offering the discerning guest modern luxury - large, bright en-suite bedrooms accented with local antiques, ultra-modern bathrooms with Philip Starck and Villeroy & Boch fixtures, wide screen TVs and Wi-Fi, a fresh, modern kitchen complementing the top-end "La Cornue" oven and wine cave for the connoisseurs and gourmets. All types of fruit trees, flowers and spices awaken the senses in your lovingly tended private garden. Take a dip in the heated pool and cap the day off with local wine and delicacies from the village shops, 5 minute walk away, on your private terrace shaded by grapevines. In the autumn and winter marvel at the Dordogne's foliage and nestle with a cognac or "vin chaud" by the crackling fire in the Maison's ancient stone hearth. Only minutes away, Domme is the perfect base to explore Sarlat, France's best preserved medieval and renaissance city, the enchanting castles of Beynac, Fayrac, Castelnaud and La Roque-Gageac, the UNESCO World Heritage prehistoric caves at Lascaux and the endless charms and delights of the towns and villages of the Dordogne's Perigord Noir.
