Matala | Bedrooms: 3 | Sleeps: 6 + 1

Rates: from £2,112 per week

Wood, stone, style - combined with the creativity and craftsmanship of the owners - these are the key elements of this stunning holiday villa, set among endless olive groves in the wonderfully unspoiled and peaceful southern part of Crete. A great variety of sandy and remote beaches as well as nearby historical sites are worth exploring before finishing the day with a glass of Greek wine and a relaxing meal in one of the numerous beachside tavernas.

Built in 2010 on the slope of a small hill with views over the village Pitsidia, Villa Harmonia is conveniently close to small shops, tavernas (Greek restaurants) and most importantly the beautiful beaches that line the southern coast of Crete, some of which you might get the chance to enjoy by yourselves all day long. The nearest beach, Komos, is not even 1.5km away from the house, and other picturesque areas like the famous resort of Matala are also only a short drive away. Apart from the wonderful swimming beaches there are many places to see and to keep you occupied, if so wished. Only a 5-minute drive from the villa you can find the Phaistos Minoan Palace which was home of the Minoan Greeks, the very first civilisation of Europe even before Athens and Rome. The first Christian church was built (and still stands today) in Gourtes which is half an hour away from Villa Harmonia. There are many other interesting sites that your locally based A&K Rep can point out to you during your stay. Traditional Cretan festivals welcoming visitors to enjoy dance and music; local tavernas serving fresh fish and authentic dishes including scrumptious lamb, pork, chicken and organic vegetables - they all invite you to experience the Greek way of life and the hospitality the locals are known for. Villa Harmonia is entirely built from natural stone and set among 2000m2 of private land, 400m2 of which is a manicured garden area with lawn, flowers, shrubs and herbs, as well as a small vegetable garden from which guests are welcome to pick anything that takes their fancy. There is also a hand-crafted wood stove and large grill for BBQ. The 8x5m swimming pool offers welcoming refreshment from the hot summer sun.

Ground Floor

There are 2 comfortable bedrooms, one with 1.60m bed plus single bed and the other with twin beds (the latter has a flat-screen TV), both extending onto terraces with access to garden and pool.
Both bedrooms share a bathroom with shower. There is an additional shower room next to the entrance hall.
Furthermore there is a well-equipped kitchen and open-plan living area with fireplace and doors leading onto a dining and lounge terrace.

First Floor

An internal staircase leads up to the impressive 100m2 master bedroom (1.80m bed) with a native cypress tree trunk emerging through the floor up to the high ceiling.
The bathroom is open-plan and features a Jacuzzi bath tub in the centre. Sliding glass doors open up onto a private sun terrace with stairs leading down to the pool area and garden.

  • Memorial Parade, held in Heraklion to celebrate the uprising of Greeks against Ottoman Turks in 1821.
  • Burning of Judas celebrations. Easter is the main public holiday in Greece and in Ayios Nikolaos, it is celebrated with the burning of an effigy of Judas on Lake Voulismeni accompanied by the sound of firecrackers.

TIME ZONE Greece operates on GMT + 2 hours.

LANGUAGE Modern Greek (as opposed to Ancient) is the national language of Greece. Vernacular speech contains many borrowings from foreign languages, including Italian, French, Turkish and English, so you may hear some familiar words in everyday speech. "Tourist Police" whose lapel badges picture a Union Jack or American flag speak English. In Greece, people whose work brings them into contact with visitors from overseas are generally excellent English speakers.

CURRENCY The Euro, divided into 100 Cents.

MONEY MATTERS Travellers cheques can easily be converted into Euros; some larger stores will take them as payment. Smaller denominations are preferred. Major credit cards are widely accepted (though American Express less so) and ATM access is widespread.

TIPPING Like most European countries, tipping in restaurants is common, with a recommended 10% on a discretionary basis according to service. Check that a service charge has not been added to your bill before deciding whether to tip. Taxi drivers do not usually expect a tip but it is common practice and considered polite to round up taxi fares.

WEATHER Greece enjoys a typically Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and cool, occasionally wet winters. Summer temperatures can reach the upwards of 90 degrees Fahrenheit and sun protection in the form of sun cream, a sun hat and lightweight clothing is recommended.

CLOTHING Style is fairly casual throughout Greece though in more rural areas and during Easter more conservative dress may be observed, for example covered shoulders. Cathedrals, churches and other religious sites require conservative dress. Both sexes should cover their arms, legs and shoulders. Cotton and other light fabrics are comfortable choices for summertime as the heat can be extreme during summer months. You are advised to take lightweight light coloured items, including a sun hat to protect your skin from the affects of sun damage. Spring and autumn temperatures dictate light to medium-weight clothing selections and in winter you will need a pullover and a coat. When dining at better restaurants and for any special occasion during your journey, dress is more formal. For gentlemen, a "jacket and tie" standard is appropriate, with an equivalent standard of eveningwear for ladies. Bring comfortable walking shoes with low or no heels.

HEALTH For up to date information on latest health and vaccination recommendations, please contact your doctor.

ELECTRICITY Electrical service is supplied at 220 volts/50 hertz.

Many thanks for making our stay at Villa Harmonia so special - we feel as though we have been staying at the house of a friend rather than in a rented villa! The villa is beautiful and has clearly been deigned with love and artistry. Special thanks for all of the homegrown produce - eggs, tomatos, cucumber, melon - as well as the delicious cheesecake, orange marble chocolate cake and tzodzuki! All thoroughly enjoyed. We had a super barbecue with the fish too. Finally, what a splendid seafood meal we enjoyed at The Dolphin.
Theodora really is the hostess with the mostess!
Love, thanks and best wishes The Cobain Family

The finishing touches

Ever dreamt of driving through the Chianti hills in a red Ferrari, or along the Moyenne Corniche to Monaco in a Bentley? How about sailing along the Cote d'Azur to St Tropez in a private yacht or speed boat? Sometimes the home is all that you need, but if you're lured into culture, excitement, activity, improving your cooking or simply dabbling in landscapes, then speak to one of our Villa Specialists for an insight into what we can arrange.
