Siena Highlights

An hour from Florence lays a gem of a town; Siena hosts a world renowned horse racing pageant, plentiful history, an underwater cavern and a good restaurant or two. It’s definitely worth a day trip at the very least.

Visit the Underground Aqueduct Network
When appreciating the Fonte Gaia in Siena you probably wouldn’t think about how the water is sourced. Over 25km of water flows in an underground labyrinth which was excavated back in the 13th century to bring water into the town (being located on a hilltop meant no natural direct access to water). These have been opened up to the public and are worth visiting – we’re sure you will appreciate the fountains a little more as a result when you’re back in the daylight. The tours have to be booked at least 12 months in advance. For more information or to book visit www.turismo.intoscana.it

Enjoy the Il Palio di Siena
Twice a year the streets of Siena come alive with its most famous festival, Il Palio di Siena. A horse race runs in the Piazza del Campo on 2nd July and 16th August. Whilst the race is popular and reserved seats are likely to have been reserved some time ago, standing in the heart of the action is just as exciting. Don’t worry if you don’t get to see much of the race however as the festivities around the Palio are plentiful so there will be plenty to see and do over these weekends in the town. Learn about the town’s history in the Piazza del Campo
When not playing host to the Palio, Piazza del Campo (or Il Campo) is surrounded by cafes, restaurants, and historic buildings, and is a place in the heart of Siena which is a must see. Narrow medieval streets lead to the piazza, which was originally a Roman forum and more recently Siena's main marketplace. Here you’ll find most of the town’s important buildings including the second tallest medieval bell tower in Italy. You can work up an appetite for a good authentic Italian lunch by climbing the tower’s 505 steps. You’ll be rewarded when you get to the top with stunning views across Siena. Learn about medicinal plants at the Botanical Gardens
Guided tours for groups (of ten or more) are available of the Botanical Gardens which are located at the University of Siena. The garden is dedicated to the cultivation of medicinal plants and is a fascinating place to learn about natural medicines. The tranquil gardens were first established in 1588 and have undergone numerous expansions and changes right up to modern day. Guided tours are available from 9.30am – 5pm Monday to Friday and can be booked by calling +039-0577235409/7

Experience fine dining Italian style
Il Canto, which is situated in the town’s Hotel Certosa di Maggiano, is widely recognised as a top restaurant and was recognised as one of the world’s 50 best (www.theworlds50best.com/awards/1-50-winners/il-canto/). Chef Paolo Loppriore cooks up an eclectic selection of dishes which challenge traditional Tuscan cuisine and are designed to awaken the palate. Promising to be an experience you won’t forget we recommend booking in advance. For more information or to book visit www.certosadimaggiano.com or call +39 0577 28 81 80
