A Mini Break at Villa Jasmine

It was late April when my husband and some friends of ours threw caution to the wind and embarked on a child-free mini-break. Enthused by trips we’d made years before we eagerly gathered together our nearest and dearest and headed for the South of France.

Our base for the long weekend was the beautiful Villa Jasmine in St Maxime, a jewel of a property that delivers as much as the photographs promise. The master bedroom’s balcony overlooks the sea and the ground floor bedrooms open onto beautiful terraces, in essence we were all happy with our chosen rooms. Further exploration of the villa unveiled an excellent sound system and no obvious nearby neighbours to annoy too much with our choice of tunes, a games room which was ideal for teenagers (thankfully there were none of those with us!) and, in the basement, table tennis, a pool table and a garage large enough to fit a cavalcade of cars in. As night fell the pool and outdoor areas were illuminated in soft lighting and we set to cooking up a storm in the outdoor kitchen and barbecue area. Thankfully we had pre-ordered a shopping service so had a choice selection of meats and wines to see us through the evening at least. There was nothing that we could see that this property didn’t deliver on and we were looking forward to exploring the very next day…

St Maxime’s better known neighbour St Tropez is just a short boat hop away but before heading there we took some time to enjoy our home-town. The coastline is vast and most of the beaches are beautiful. As well as feeling the sand in our toes we enjoyed a spot of lunch in a café by the harbour and headed to the old town for a bit of retail therapy. A daily market sold plenty of fresh fruit, vegetables, meat and fish to stock up our supplies, whilst an arts & crafts market ensured some none essential purchases were also made. During our stay we visited St Maxime many more times some for daytime strolls, others for evening dining; the choices were endless and our representative made some great recommendations, we particularly enjoyed a great meal at Cote Jardin.

We arrived in St Tropez, our boat rubbing shoulders with many larger and altogether more intriguing vessels. We couldn’t help but wonder who was hiding behind the blackened glass as we disembarked. Overall, despite its reputation, St Tropez was much more ‘classic’ than we were all expecting. Despite the overstated boats bobbing in the harbour, the warm and friendly welcome we received by the shops, bars and cafes left us feeling like very much like VIPs. Life is naturally centered around the harbour here and we found a perfect people-watching pavement café and settled in. When it was time to go back to St Maxime we dutifully queued for our return water taxi hoping against hope that we’d be able to hitch a ride on an altogether more glitzy boat. Sadly it wasn’t to be and we chugged out of the harbour and headed home.

The final day of our mini-break was spent around the pool and whilst pleasant, the weather was not overly warm so the pool heating was very welcome. As we relaxed and reflected on our time away we summarised that this indeed would be a great villa to bring kids, we thought it best not to tell them that when we arrived home!
