A Weekend in Lech
Liz Harper, Abercrombie & Kent’s PR Manager, embarked on a journey to Lech for a weekend of snow shoeing and skiing, and discovered what whilst snow shoeing may not be for her, Lech most certainly is.
Consuming copious amounts of wine the night before embarking on our first snow shoeing lesson probably wasn’t the best idea we’d had, but honestly, how difficult could it be? What we hadn’t banked on however was an over-zealous (and super fit instructor!), or a steep climb in knee high snow. We were desperately unfit and desperately overdressed in our ski gear – it was like doing high impact aerobics wearing every single item in your wardrobe. The fresh mountain air and stunning scenery might have helped to take the mind away from the burning pain in our thighs in the short term, but it didn’t do enough to convince us that snow shoeing was a sport we wished to persue further.
It was my first visit to Lech (location of Bridget Jones’s ski lift incident in Bridget Jones: The Edge Of Reason) and it was blatantly obvious why the Mark Darcy’s and alike flock here. The picture-postcard village was authentic, charming and sophisticated and the skiing fabulous whatever your ability. It’s difficult to know what came first, first class service or a resort which attracts demanding clientele: either way Lech delivers and its clients reward it handsomely with their loyalty, returning here year after year.
Whilst skiers the world over know of Lech, few were aware of it’s unassuming neighbour, Warth-Schroken. Until now that is. This season saw the opening of a new two kilometre gondola lift which links the two resorts, and increases the skiing area of Lech by over 50%. Now skiers can take advantage of the best conditions across a massively expanded ski area - world class Lech just got better!
I’m not sure snow shoeing is really for me – my preference is for swift and (vaguely) elegant schlepping down mountains rather than breathless and clunky stomping up them – Lech though is an absolute beauty …… and if it’s good enough for Mr Darcy...
