The Alps - A Tale of Two Seasons

Whether you’re commiserating the end of summer, or rejoicing the beginning of those autumnal days, keep the Alps in your thoughts. With the ski season fast approaching, and many a plan to escape to the white stuff being hatched, this winter playground is gearing up for another tremendous season. But don’t for a minute think that the Alps are a one trick pony… the summer is a spectacular time to head to the mountains too. As the temperatures rise, and the snow melts, the mountain range begins to reveal its alter ego as it dons its summer suits; snow covered pistes are transformed into vibrant, multi-coloured meadows, the shriek of après ski silenced with the soothing sounds of streaming rivers.

OFF-PISTE IN ANDERMATT

If you were to ask your grandparents where they skied, the chances are they would say Andermatt. Formerly the favoured resort of families of the stationed British & Swiss soldiers during the Great War, Andermatt is a treasured gem in the heart of Switzerland. Today the resort is experiencing that heyday once again, starting with the opening of The Chedi, Andermatt last season. With a staggering amount of private investment being pumped into the infrastructure and lift system, this idyllic, traditional, cobble-lined resort village is the place to go this season. We can't shout loudly enough about the pristine off-piste opportunities atop Gemsstock Mountain, a 'mere' 2,961m high. Put simply: it has to be seen to be believed.

CHAMPAGNE CONDITIONS IN ST. MORITZ

The reputation for glitz and glamour that surrounds St. Moritz is indeed correct. This chic, exclusive resort in the Upper Engadine valley of Switzerland plays host to some of the world's most refined events of the international social calendar. The iconic frozen lake sets the stage for the famous Winter Polo tournament in January and the exhilarating White Turf horse race in February which attracts the great and the good from far and wide. The atmosphere is electric and the sophistication is inspiring. It's a winter wonderland in all manner of the word. We've collated some of the best chalets and hotels available to rent to complement our already immensely popular Swiss portfolio.

ZIPPING OVER TO THE ZILLERTAL

We love Austria. The skiing is legendary and the après even more so. But demand has far outstripped supply in the past; that is, until now. In the well-loved Zillertal region, made famous by the annual raucous DJ-driven end of season Snowbombing concert held in the lively resort of Mayrhofen, a comparatively under the radar resort, Zell am Ziller is getting ready to make some noise of its own with the introduction of the first collection of luxury ski chalets. High up the mountain, affording same of the best views we've ever seen, perch these chalets. Products of the sheer love and determination of a well-respected local hotelier family, the four chalets are converted cattle cabins which take their name, Hoch Leger from the literal (and appropriate) translation of high pastures. New to the market, we are very excited about this addition to our Austrian portfolio.

JUMP ON BOARD THE GLACIER EXPRESS

Cast aside any recent experiences of those sweaty commutes on London's underground. Push to the back of your mind the constant strikes and delays that might cloud your judgement of train travel. It doesn't need to be like this. Train journeys need not conjure up these emotions of dread. Our recommended cure? The Glacier Express in Switzerland. Next summer, board this sublime eight hour journey from Zermatt to St. Moritz to enjoy the breathtaking views from the panoramic glass carriages as you climb to heights of over 2,000 metres, cross some 291 bridges and pass through a mere 91 tunnels. This truly is the best seat in all of Switzerland.

DRIVE BY THE DOLOMITES

Could there be anywhere more appealing in the summer than the Dolomites? A UNESCO World Heritage site located in one of the world's most coveted foodie destinations; we've brought you lakes, vineyards, coastlines and culture with our Italian summer villas, now we bring you mountains, Michelin stars and Martinis in amongst the country's most inspiring backdrop. Located in Northern Italy, the Dolomites provide a perfect pre- or post-Italian Grand Tour with Verona, Venice and the Italian Lakes all within easy driving distance.

PONDER ON THE PORTES DU SOLEIL

It is a well-known fact that the bustle and buzz of winter resorts far from winds down during the summer months in the French Alps. In fact, we'd argue it steps up a gear come the arrival of the mountains' summer coat. With the recent introduction of our Portes Du Soleil chalet collection to our existing French Alps portfolio, we highly recommend you consider turning your attentions to this hidden gem tucked away below Lake Geneva, bridging the boundaries between France and Switzerland for next year's action packed, fun-filled family summer holiday. Or if you can't wait that long, then why wait until summer…there's still availability for this year's family skiing holiday.
