The Amalfi Coast
The glamorous Amalfi Coast has much to offer: rolling hills, soaring cliffs, picturesque coastal towns and family-friendly villas.
Stretching about 50km down the west coast, Amalfi occupies a captivating position overlooking the azure Italian sea. The scenery is classic Italy, of fragrant lemon groves, winding streets and picture-postcard villages tumbling down to the sea. Whilst the resort has glamour and luxury in spades, its close proximity to historical sites such as Mount Vesuvius and Herculaneum, plus its excellent transport links to Naples and Salerno, makes it the ideal destination for a laid-back villa holiday.
Best time to go
Amalfi and its nearby towns are beautiful any time of the year, however spring and early autumn will let you enjoy the winding coastal roads without the busy tourist traffic. The coast does get very hot and crowded in the peak summer months and in winter the area shuts down for a well-earned break.
A villa holiday on the Amalfi Coast provides the perfect contrast between old-school Italian glamour and a relaxing home from home, often without the high price tags commanded by the luxury hotels.
VILLA GRANDE - Positano
Grande by name, and most certainly grand by nature, this exceptionally appointed villa was one of the first private homes on the coast to open its doors to guests. A haven of relaxation and tranquillity in beautiful Positano, the villa boasts a lush green garden that belies its location right on the doorstep of the bustling coastline. Enjoy envying stares from fellow holiday makers over the private pool, hot tub, steam room, pizza oven and full time staff who will pamper you senseless during your stay.
PARCO AL MARE - Sorrento
Relax in your own private infinity pool in an enviable position overlooking the Bay of Naples, just a short hop away from all the sights of the Amalfi Coast, including Positano, the beach of Marina di Cantone and the island of Capri. Located in the hills around Le Tore forest, the area around the villa is rich in wildlife and the villa has been recently renovated, making your stay all the more comfortable with a two-level spa including a Turkish bath, chromotherapy spa and hot tub.
A hidden treasure, Scaletta combines history, comfort and exquisite views across Amalfi and Ravello. The villa features original stonework dating back over 800 years but has been sympathetically restored to include all the necessary luxuries including a beautiful framed infinity pool. There's even a restaurant next door to complete your relaxing stay: you may not want to leave!
MONASTERO DI POSITANO - Positano
Take over your own Italian palace at Monastero, the epitome of traditional Positano luxury. The decadent interior is set over four floors whilst the garden overflows with tumbling bougainvillea and citrus trees and features a hot tub and quiet terraces for relaxation. Built in 1716 as a residence for a bishop, the interior is an education in Baroque elegance: painted ceilings, lacquered doors, stucco works and antique laces adorn the unique villa, which also offers the mod-cons of an indoor pool, Turkish hammam and sauna.
We love the Amalfi Coast in late spring, when the flowers are in full bloom and the roads are quieter. In high summer the temperatures soar and people from all across Europe flock to the region making the area buzzy (or busy, you decide!) Early spring and autumn is a great time to catch the region at a quieter pace of life but still enjoy sunny skies and ambient temperatures.
Sailing fans will love the region in May: you can catch the Tre Golfi (Three Gulfs Cup) in the Bay of Naples or watch the nail-biting action and luxury yachts of Capri Sailing Week. People-watching during these events is just as interesting as the offshore action!
Sorrento is famous for its incredible lemons, so make sure you sample some of the local Limoncello, perfect for an after-dinner digestive.
The Amalfi Coast is best explored at your own pace, so take the time to relax and unwind as you potter around the pretty coastal villages, around the olive groves, vineyards and garden terraces that give the region its undeniable beauty.
No trip to the coast is complete without a visit by boat to the island of Capri, for a taste of luxury in Capri town and a step back in time in the hillside village of Anacapri. Once on the island you can easily visit the famous Blue Grotto or take the funicular up to Capri Town and indulge in some shopping: there's everything from luxury brands to handmade leather sandals, manufactured on Capri for hundreds of years.
