The New Portugal

Algarve, Portugal, Travel Blog

We like the ‘new’ Algarve: its picturesque coastline an undulating range of russet red cliffs, with Moorish white-washed villages dotted between orange groves, with the pounding Atlantic just a short drive away.

Worlds away from the concrete jungle of developments that mar the Algarve’s coastline, Boliqueime is all terracotta tiles, tiny cobbled backstreets and shady groves dotted with fruit trees. Here you’ll find Villa Monchique, a large property with commanding views. Villa Monchique is blessed with stunning scenery all around and magnificent grounds; the ultimate property for a large gathering or family celebration in the sun-drenched Algarve. From here you can make a quick trip to the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve, its geographical beauty resonant of old-time Portugal before development overtook the coastline. With a separate kids pool and an outdoor games room offering a welcome shaded relief from the sun, it’s the perfect Portuguese villa to escape to with the family.

Algarve, Travel Blog, PortugalBoliqueime is the perfect place to try a cycle tour of the Algarve, negotiating the scene Ria Formosa or going off road for a more action-filled adventure. Up in the hills, the warm, aromatic air tumbles down the terraces fragranced by pine trees, almond groves and orange blossom. Nearby you’ve got some 25 beaches in Albufeira to choose from, each one different but all an education in the perfect Portuguese beach: fine golden sand and warm, clear waters. Just half an hour’s drive is Faro, the capital of the Algarve, with lively nightlife, an attractive marina and an old town of winding streets.

In Tavira, escape from the world completely in the relatively untouristy East Algarve, a pretty patchwork of fields leading down to a sheltered beach from a historic town which retains much of its small-town charm. Sto Estevao is the perfect villa to explore the less inhabited coastal areas: a contemporary residence with Moorish influences and light, airy rooms. The eastern Algarve offers great hiking, unspoilt beaches and offshore islands easily reached by small boat, but Sto Estevao is equipped with all you need to relax with its private grounds, inviting day beds and a beautiful swimming pool.

A good place to start your adventure is the ancient Roman bridge, famouAlgarve, Portugal, Travel Blogs for its rosemary-strewn crossing trampled by passing pilgrims. An abundance of churches actually makes it the most religiously populated town in all of Portugal – no mean feat. From above, its network of criss-crossed roofs is due to a style of architecture known as telhado em tesoura – scissor roofs – in which each room in a house has its own separate roof. A great way to see the view is from Tavira’s abandoned and unlovely water tower; closed on Sundays, but offering a stunning vantage point that’s a little less precarious than climbing the ramparts of the nearby ruined castle.

Loule is a quiet rural hideaway in the heart of the Algarve, enjoying peace, tranquillity and privacy. Here the old Portugal meets the new, in frescoed buildings and a walled old town meeting the bobbing gin palaces of the harbour in a delightful clash. The maze of narrowed streets are lined with cafes, bars and restaurants, while the famous gypsy market is a must see for authentic trinket hunters.

Villa Apolonia, PortugalVilla Apolonia is located nearby, a country villa exuding charm and comfort with a contemporary edge and an emphasis on style and outdoor living. There are plenty of outdoor areas to maximise living in the fresh air, including a BBQ, dining area and covered lounge terrace. A peaceful retreat with a number of olive trees and its own herb and vegetable garden, Villa Apolonia will invite and delight its' guests to relax and unwind in calm sophistication.
