Celebrate Valentine's Day in France

paris

Valentine's Day and romantic France go hand in hand – but is there really a link between the day of love and one of the most romantic countries in the world? You may be surprised, to learn that Valentine’s Day may well have started in France!

The first evidence is that it was commonly known in both England and France that birds and other animals paired off and mated 'in the middle of February'. It is thought that people began celebrating this as the special day for lovers because of this association with 'love' in nature.

In addition, the Duke of Orléans (a Frenchman), while imprisoned in London in the 15th Century, is thought to have written love letters to his wife back in France. These are thought to be what became cartes d'amitiés, now known as French Valentine's Day cards.

But the main reason is that France has a Valentine Day event nobody else can claim. There's a little village called St. Valentin, in Indre, in the central Val de Loire Region which makes the most of this February event and marketed itself as le village des amoureux, celebrating an annual festival taking place from 12th to 14th February.

However, the origins of St Valentine are not clear enough to say with certainty that the holiday originated in France.

Je t’aime is known universally as the French way of saying I love you. French is often called the language of love and some French romantic sayings are used worldwide. The sayings below are from various centuries of French literary talents, but all of them are sure to make a big impression when written inside a Valentine's Day card.

Le prix d'Amour, c'est seulement Amour, ... Il faut aimer si l'on veut être aimé. ( Honoré d' Urfé)
This can be translated as follows: The price of love is only love, ... one must love if one desires to be loved

En sa beauté gît ma mort et ma vie. ( Maurice Scève)
Meaning: In her beauty rests (both) my death and my life. Replace "sa" (her) with "ta" (your) so that it reads "in YOUR beauty” making the sentence become even more romantic

L'amour fait les plus grandes douceurs et les plus sensibles infortunes de la vie. ( Madeleine de Scudéry)
This abstract line about love translates to: Love is responsible for the greatest pleasures and the worst problems in life. To be used at a melancholic moment, such as when being separated from a loved one

Je serai poète et toi poésie. (François Coppée)
It means: I'll be a poet, and you'll be poetry. Great inscription for a card or gift!

Aimer, ce n'est pas se regarder l'un l'autre, c'est regarder ensemble dans la même direction. (Antoine de Saint-Exupéry)
This quote means: Love does not consist in looking at each other, but rather in, together, looking in the same direction.
