About the Lake District

Situated in the northwest of England, the Lake District’s towering fells, glassy waters and green pastures offer a backdrop as pretty as a picture. In fact, at its most dramatic, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is like a Turner painting writ large (it’s no wonder the artist sought inspiration here). This is where you can scale England’s tallest mountain, Scafell Pike, and its largest lake, Windermere. All that scenic beauty, coupled with one of the lowest population densities in the country, means you can enjoy the great outdoors in relative peace and quiet.

Wildlife, too, finds sanctuary in the Lakes. Here is one of the only places you’ll spot red squirrel in England. You may also catch sight of bashful deer skittering across the woodlands and nature reserves. Be sure to turn your eyes skyward for a chance to see osprey, red kite and peregrine falcon.

Of course, there’s more to the Lake District than just its natural wonders. Charming towns and villages such as Grasmere, Keswick and Bowness-on-Windermere offer a warm welcome and a good meal — especially at the several Michelin-starred restaurants in the area.

Inspiring scenery and famously hospitable locals make the Lake District a special destination for a holiday.
