About Villa Pliniana

Villa Pliniana may not be as old as its name suggests, but it certainly has plenty to boast about. This grandiose Lake Como villa takes its name from a mention of the site by Pliny in 1 AD. 1,572 years later the villa was built by Count Giovanni Anguissola. The rest is history. And it’s a history crammed with artists, scientists, statesmen and monarchs. Lord Byron and Napoleon stayed here, and Shelley described it as ‘the most lovely that eye ever beheld’.

This delightfully restored 16th-century palazzo is located in an estate as expansive as the accommodation. The main villa offers ten exquisite bedrooms within four large apartments, while three additional villas provide a further nine bedrooms. Altogether, Villa Pliniana can accommodate 39 guests. Smaller parties should note that it’s only rented as a whole to guarantee privacy.

Two lavish ballrooms are equipped to host events of up to 200 guests, while the stunning waterfront gardens can accommodate up to 500 guests for large weddings and events.

The estate has its own private spa with covered heated pool, Jacuzzi, Turkish bath, Scottish showers, sauna and a lounge area. It also has a heliport, on-site parking and a large jetty.

The interiors, designed by the Spanish architect Patricia Urquiola, include elaborate Venetian terrazzo-style floors and painted wooden ceilings.

Villa Pliniana is also home to the piano on which Rossini wrote the opera Tancredi. Perhaps the incomparable surroundings will inspire you to write your own masterpiece!

In the area

As a destination of choice for European aristocrats and today’s glitterati, Lake Como remains the epitome of a glamorous vacation destination. Villa Pliniana is located in the town of Torno, surrounded by peaceful views of Lake Como’s natural beauty, lush gardens, idyllic small towns, and delimited by waterfalls to the east and west. The Villa’s location, architecture, history and incredible views are unique; but what really sets Villa Pliniana apart is the Pliniana Water Source; that exits in the central court of the Villa, descends through one of the apartments and exits on Lake Como. A professional jetty assures the safe mooring of boats; a heli-pad allows easy connection to Milan, and main airports. Access by car all the way to the Villa is by a private road connecting to the main road. The Villa is 8 km (5 miles) from the center of Como, just a short 10-minute drive; and approximately 60 minutes from both Milano-Malpensa airport or from the center of Milan.
